A Study on Birth and Death Registrations in Rural Korea
Lee Seung-Wook

Kim Eu-Gene
Abstract
This study was conducted to examine patterns of birth and death registration in Korea. We administered two surveys: one for birth registration in Chuncheon Gun in Kangwon Province and the other for death registration in Gapyong Gun in Kyunggi Province. In order to increase number of eligible subjects, we asked about vital events during last five years, possibly creating some memory bias eventually. All the registrations were reviewed from various aspects: 1) birth order, health insurance type, registration time, reason for delayed registration, maternity benefits from the health insurance, and others for birth registration, 2) sociodemographic factors for both the dead and responsible figure for the funeral, health insurance type, tomb sites, issuing methods of death certificates, causes of death, death registration, funeral subsidy from the insurance agency, and others for death registration. Registration activity seemed to be satisfactory, However, only one third of the infants registered the health insurance system. Its reason was mostly that they din¡¯t know the correct time for register. Also, for the deaths, about a half did not receive any funeral subsidy form the health insurance agency. It was suggested if we combine health insurance and vital registration together, we could enhance its registration rate.
